Habits are what we repeatedly do.
“We make a habit and the habit makes us” – Lorna Mendis
Above quote is attributed to a female class teacher who taught 8-10 year old students.
In order to have a successful life, we really need to take stock of all our habits, the good and the bad.
Once you identify any habits you want to REMOVE from your life, you also need to identify new habits which you want to ADD to your life. This is because habits which are ingrained in your sub-conscious mind and body cannot be easily removed. But they can be replaced! So one major bridge you need to cross is to understand that habits can be replaced but not removed easily.
Anyone who has tried to quit smoking, eat healthier, start saving more money or work out more would already realize this after a few weeks or months of trying. It is just plain hard to stop or start anything cold turkey. Not saying that it cannot be done! but it is darn challenging.
Another interesting aspect of this topic is that EVERY individual is different! What works for your work colleague or friend will not necessarily work for you. This is also why this topic is a million dollar industry at the moment.
You can read all the books there are in the world related to mastering your habits, but you will not be successful till you actually TRY a bunch of the techniques and find out;
- what works for you?
- what doesn’t work for you?
- how can you adapt that technique or process in such a way that it works for your situation?
- how are you planning to track your progress? (what doesn’t get measured, does not improve)
This requires that you spend some time writing down your thoughts on this topic and give your self the gift of time to gain some clarity on this matter, see where you are feeling some resistance, discuss with a friend/coach/mentor.
Your future self will Thank you!
